Show Boat background

Show Boat

A charismatic gambler's fortunes start to decline, putting his budding romance with the riverboat captain's daughter, who is smitten with his charm, at risk of being destroyed.

On the iconic show boat "Cotton Blossom", the Hawks family presents a spectacular musical experience in the southern United States. Star performers Julie LaVerne and her husband dazzle audiences, but their happiness is short-lived. When a rumor spreads that Julie, who is half-black, is married to a white man, they're forced to leave due to anti-miscegenation laws. The spotlight then shines on Magnolia Hawks, Captain Andy's daughter, who becomes the new star alongside her leading man, the charismatic but troubled gambler Gaylord Ravenal. Their whirlwind romance culminates in a secret marriage, much to the dismay of Magnolia's disapproving mother. The couple's idyllic honeymoon is short-lived, as Gaylord's addiction to gambling soon destroys their fortune. Left penniless and pregnant, Magnolia must find a way to start anew.
