In Algeria, eight French monks of The Monastery Notre-Dame de l'Atlas of Tibhirine lived a peaceful life serving the poor community surrounding the monastery in 1996. Despite being threatened by terrorists during the Algerian Civil War, they chose to remain in the country, refusing to return to France.
