In late 18th century France, Jean Valjean, a former prisoner, is on the run from the law and society due to his past as a thief. After being released from prison, he is helped by a kind bishop who tells him to live an honest life. Valjean changes his identity and becomes a successful businessman, producing black beads and eventually becoming the mayor of a small town. However, his life is disrupted when his former nemesis, Javert, is assigned as the town's police chief and becomes determined to capture him.
