In the midst of the Apache wars, a devoted Army dispatch rider forges a deep connection with a woman and her child as they struggle to stay alive.

Army scout Hondo Lane, played by John Wayne, discovers a secluded homestead in Apache territory, inhabited by a woman and her son, who believe they are protected by a treaty with the Apaches. However, Lane is aware that the Army has recently broken the treaty, sparking Apache revenge on settlers.
