In 1938, a World War I veteran named Stan remains unaware that the war has ended. He continues to patrol the French trenches, mistakenly shooting down a French pilot. Oliver, Stan's old friend, discovers his picture in the newspaper and visits him at the Soldier's Home, assuming Stan is injured. Oliver takes pity on Stan and invites him home for dinner, but his wife has other plans. As Stan causes chaos in the kitchen, he finds refuge with their neighbor, Mrs. Gilbert, until her husband, Mr. Gilbert, returns unexpectedly with a shotgun.
