Exhausted director Thomas Novacheck is about to give up on auditions for his new play, an adaptation of Venus in Fur, when a soaked and assertive young actress named Vanda walks in, ready to try out. Despite initial reservations, Vanda transforms into the novel's central character, Wanda von Dunajew, and the boundaries between reality and fiction blur, making it hard to distinguish apathy from obsession and master from servant.
