In 1930s New Orleans, a drifter named Chaney teams up with a street fight promoter named Speed to make money fighting on the streets. They're joined by Speed's former partner Poe, and Chaney finds love with a local woman named Lucy. However, Speed's addiction to gambling puts their profits at risk, and they must make a comeback fight against a champion managed by a rival promoter.
