In a predominantly white Iowa town, Flip fantasizes about becoming a hip-hop star, befriending Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre. He perfects his rapping skills with friends James and Trevor, adopting Black slang and attire. Flip also attempts to sell flour as cocaine, but amidst his ambitions, he neglects the harsh realities around him, including his father's unemployment, his mother's reliance on Food Stamps, and his girlfriend's pregnancy. As his friends face their own struggles, Flip must confront the harsh realities of his life and learn to stay grounded.
