In the pre-Civil War era, a young man named Chad is forced to flee his home in Kentucky after his foster family dies in a cholera epidemic. He finds refuge with a neighbor, Caleb Turner, who takes him in and teaches him how to farm. However, Chad soon becomes restless and sets his sights on making a better life for himself in the city. He meets a wealthy landowner, Major Buford, who takes a liking to him and decides to adopt him. The Major tries to turn Chad into a southern gentleman, but Chad struggles to fit in with the wealthy elite due to his humble beginnings. As the Civil War approaches, Chad is faced with a moral dilemma when the Major presents him with a Confederate uniform. He chooses to join the Union Army instead, seeking out his former foster father, Caleb Turner, who is a lieutenant in the Union Army. Chad becomes a mounted courier and eventually reaches the rank of lieutenant. When the Union Army advances into Confederate territory, Chad and Caleb face off against their former friends and family, including the Major and Margaret Dean's officer brother and father.
