In 1965, a 21-year-old from Toronto named Paul Saltzman traveled to Mississippi to join the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee as a civil rights worker.

Paul Saltzman, a 21-year-old Canadian, volunteered as a civil rights worker in Mississippi in 1965. He was arrested, spent 10 days in jail, and smuggled letters out to the Toronto Star. After his release, he helped disadvantaged sharecroppers register to vote in the segregationist town of Greenwood, where he was assaulted by a young Klansman.
