A young working-class student faces the challenges of his first year at Bristol University amidst the cultural and social upheaval of 1980s Britain.

Against the backdrop of Thatcherism in 1985, Brian Jackson, a scholarship boy from seaside Essex, enrolls in the University of Bristol with a passion for knowledge. He tries out for the "University Challenge" team, where he becomes smitten with Alice, a beautiful blonde with a complex past.
