Captain John Boyd is promoted to Fort Spencer after a questionable victory in the Mexican-American War, only to find himself under scrutiny from his commanding general. He becomes third in command at the isolated fort, where he is joined by a cast of eccentric characters, including two Native American siblings, a chaplain, and a few soldiers with their own personal demons. Their routine is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious Scottish stranger who claims to have survived a harrowing ordeal in the wilderness, where his party leader resorted to cannibalism to stay alive.
