Power background

Power

In 18th century Wurtemburg, a young Jewish man named Suess strives to elevate his status with the aid of a cunning Duke, embroiled in a intricate dance of self-enhancement and deceit within the Jewish quarter.

Conrad Veidt gives a splendid performance in a difficult role, insinuating himself into the life of a dissolute duke and pushing him to heights of power. However, in doing so, he turns the one love of his life over to the duke and almost lets an innocent man die as a matter of policy. His retribution comes when his daughter commits suicide to escape the duke's attentions.
