In 1943, a young orphan girl named Penny, aged around 10, is tasked with caring for her younger sister as they move in with their aunt and uncle in an estate north of Florence. As a devout Catholic, Penny is concerned about her uncle's soul, as he is Jewish and a progressive thinker. Despite his kind nature, Penny worries about not being able to please him and receiving his love. As the war reaches their doorstep, Penny's uncle becomes a target for the Germans, and she must use her wit and emotional appeals to try and protect him.
