A Tamil freedom fighter, Dheepan, flees Sri Lanka's Civil War, taking two strangers, a woman and a girl, to claim asylum in Europe. He finds work as a caretaker in a Parisian housing block, striving to build a new life for his makeshift family, but faces daily violence that awakens his warrior instincts to protect them.
