As the Union and Confederacy head towards war, Matthew and Rebecca embark on a journey to start anew in Oregon. At a remote trading post, they encounter friendly Cheyenne Indians, but Matthew's distrust of them leads him to warn a group of hunters of an impending attack. When the confrontation ends, only Rebecca and a wounded Cheyenne warrior, Hawk, remain. As winter sets in, they must rely on each other to survive, and their bond grows stronger.
