August, a city kid, is sent to live on a remote farm in South Africa with distant relatives after being orphaned. He's had trouble with foster parents in the past and is initially withdrawn. However, he finds a new sense of purpose when he discovers a large, abandoned egg that hatches into a massive ostrich named Koobus.
