A debt collector's fateful night in a haunted temple turns into a fight to free a captivating spirit from the grasp of a malevolent tree entity.

In a small town, a humble tax collector, Ning Tsai-Shen, seeks shelter for the night, but no one is willing to take him in. He finds refuge in the haunted Lan Ro temple, where he encounters a Taoist swordsman and a beautiful ghost, Nieh Hsiao-Tsing, with whom he falls in love. However, their romance is threatened by a terrifying tree spirit with a long, deadly tongue that drains the life force from its victims.
