From June 1984 to June 1985, a middle-aged doctor in Paris, Adrien, forms a platonic relationship with a young gay man named Manu, who lives with his opera-singing sister. Meanwhile, writer Sarah and her cop partner Mehdi have a newborn, but Sarah struggles with motherhood. Adrien introduces Manu to Sarah's country cabin, where Mehdi saves Manu from drowning. As they return to Paris, an affair blossoms, but a plague spreads among the city's gay community, bringing tests, illness, anger, relief, separations, and death. A year later, the friends reunite at the summer cabin, bearing witness to the profound changes happiness has undergone.
