The Wingos, a dysfunctional family from South Carolina, are struggling to come to terms with their past. After Lucas's death, his sisters Savannah and Tom are forced to confront their family's dark history. Savannah, a poet, has attempted suicide, and their mother Lila, now remarried to a wealthy man, sends Tom to New York to gather information about their family's past. Tom, a high school teacher and coach, is hesitant to open up about his family's problems, but finds solace in his sessions with therapist Susan Loewenstein. As they bond over their own family struggles, Tom and Susan's friendship blossoms into romance, helping them both to heal and find happiness.
