A young teacher, inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's era, loses his job after getting caught trying on a bra. He decides to find himself and pursue writing in New York City. He answers an ad for a housemate, leading to an unlikely friendship with the eccentric Henry Harrison. Louis gets a job selling ads for a green magazine and develops feelings for a coworker, Mary. He also meets Henry's neighbor, Gershon, and learns about the world of "extra men" - hired companions for older women. As Louis navigates these different worlds, he must also reconcile his own expectations and desires.
