The Courtesans of Bombay

In the vibrant compound of Pavan Pool in Bombay, a day unfolds as women dedicate themselves to mastering the arts of singing and dancing, while also navigating the complexities of prostitution.

Over the course of a day, we gain a glimpse into the lives of women who inhabit Pavan, Pool a compound in Bombay where they earn a living through song, dance, and prostitution. During the day, they hone their vocal and dance skills, accompanied by men with musical talent, while the idle men spend their time gambling and lounging. At night, clients visit the compound, browsing through rooms of performing women and selecting those who appeal to them, with payment varying according to their preference. As the evening wears on, prostitution becomes a reality, and our guides offer insight into this world, including the rent collector, a woman who grew up within the compound, and a small-time actor who spends his earnings there.
