In New Orleans, Socks Barbarrosa, a prizefighter, suddenly quits his title bout without explanation, sparking controversy. Despite his girlfriend Angela's support, Socks' father-in-law, a blind man known as "The Judge," disowns him, deeming him a coward. Socks joins the army, becomes a war hero in Korea, and earns back the respect of the public, except for the Judge. A hidden truth from Socks' past is revealed, both explaining his initial withdrawal and paving the way for his redemption in the Judge's eyes.
