In 1911, Saganne, a courageous and determined peasant, volunteers for service in the Sahara under the aristocratic Colonel Dubreuilh. He gains respect from Arabs, including independent warrior Amajan, and leads resourceful campaigns in the desert. After a diplomatic mission to Paris, where he has an affair with a journalist, Saganne returns to Africa and marries Madeline, the daughter of the regional administrator. However, the outbreak of World War I threatens to disrupt his success and happiness.
