A children's book writer and illustrator in Los Angeles struggles with writer's block, causing his girlfriend to become impatient and eventually break up with him. He joins her brother in a small Wisconsin town, where he experiences a change of pace and meets a local hermit and his granddaughter. As the writer navigates his new surroundings, he must also contend with the sheriff's disapproval of outsiders and the complications that arise when he falls for the granddaughter, who just happens to be the sheriff's daughter.
