A Palestinian boy, Eyad, leaves his village to attend a prestigious high school in Jerusalem, where he befriends a Jewish boy with a degenerative disease and falls in love with a Jewish girl, Naomi. Despite the societal norms against their relationship, they continue to see each other in secret. However, their love is eventually discovered, and Naomi is forced to leave school. Eyad then decides to quit school and homeschool himself to allow Naomi to continue her education. When his father finds out, he kicks Eyad out of the house. With limited job opportunities for Arabs, Eyad decides to borrow the identity of his Jewish friend, Yonatan, who is bedridden at home, and moves in with Yonatan's mother, who treats him like a son.
