In early 20th century Paris, a sewer worker named Chico saves a young prostitute named Diane from her sister's violence. When the police arrive, Chico claims Diane is his wife, and they're forced to maintain the charade to avoid prison. As they live together, love grows between them, but the looming threat of World War I casts a dark shadow over their lives.
