Yorgos Lanthimos, a renowned Greek filmmaker, was born in Athens, Greece. He pursued his passion for directing at the esteemed Stavrakos Film School in Athens, where he honed his craft in film and television.
Throughout his career, Lanthimos has demonstrated his versatility by collaborating with Greek choreographers on dance videos, as well as directing TV commercials, music videos, short films, and theater plays. His initial foray into feature filmmaking was with Kinetta (2005),which garnered critical acclaim at the Toronto and Berlin film festivals.
Lanthimos's subsequent feature, Dogtooth (2009),earned the prestigious "Un Certain Regard prize" at the Cannes film festival, followed by numerous awards at festivals worldwide. Notably, it was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award (Oscar) in 2011.
Alps, another notable project, won the "Osella for best screenplay" at the 2011 Venice film festival and Best Film at the Sydney film festival in 2012. Lanthimos's first English-language film, The Lobster (2015),premiered in Competition at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, earning a nomination for Best Original Screenplay by the Academy and winning Best Screenplay and Best Costume Design at the European Film Awards of 2015.
Lanthimos's subsequent projects include The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017),which was presented in Competition at the 70th Cannes Film Festival and won the award for Best Screenplay. His latest film, The Favourite (2018),is a historical drama centered around the British Queen Anne.
