William Preston was born on August 26, 1921, in Columbia, Pennsylvania. He pursued higher education, earning a Master's degree in English literature from The Pennsylvania State University.
William Preston's professional journey took an unconventional turn when he transitioned from his career as a bookkeeper in a Philadelphia trucking firm to pursue acting at the age of 50. This marked the beginning of his extensive stage experience, which included performing in over 60 productions of William Shakespeare's plays.
Preston's impressive stage credits also earned him a nomination for Florida's state supporting actor award. His Broadway appearances in the 1980s and 1990s showcased his versatility as an actor.
In addition to his stage work, Preston gained recognition for his television appearances, particularly as a regular cast member on The Conan O'Brien Show from 1993 to 1998, where he played the lovable character Carl "Oldy" Olson.
Throughout his film career, Preston played a wide range of roles, including John, the bum, in The Fisher King (1991),a blacksmith in Far and Away (1992),and the flask-mourner in Family Business (1989). He also appeared in notable films such as Waterworld (1995),Reckless (1995/I),Blue in the Face (1995),and The Crucible (1996).
Sadly, William Preston passed away on July 10, 1998.
