Biography

Person Biography:

William Holden was a renowned American actor, born William Franklin Beedle Jr. on April 17, 1918, in O'Fallon, Illinois. He was the eldest of three sons to Mary Blanche Ball, a high school English teacher, and William Franklin Beedle, a chemical and fertilizer analyst.

Holden's early life was marked by his interest in sports, particularly tumbling and boxing, which he learned from his father. He was also proficient in playing the piano, clarinet, and drums. Despite his father's encouragement to pursue a career in chemistry, Holden's true passion lay in acting.

After high school, Holden moved to New York and began performing in school plays and radio dramas. He was soon spotted by a Paramount talent scout and offered a six-month studio contract. Holden's early career was marked by his performances in films such as "Golden Boy" (1939) and "Our Town" (1940).

Holden's breakthrough role came when he played the part of Joe Gillis in "Sunset Boulevard" (1950),a role that earned him critical acclaim and cemented his status as a leading actor. He went on to star in a wide range of films, including "Stalag 17" (1953),"Picnic" (1955),and "Sabrina" (1954).

Throughout his career, Holden was known for his versatility and range, playing a variety of roles from romantic leads to more complex, morally ambiguous characters. He was also a successful businessman, investing in various enterprises and founding the Mount Kenya Safari Club.

Holden's personal life was marked by his marriage to actress Brenda Marshall in 1941 and his later relationship with actress Stefanie Powers. He was also a passionate advocate for wildlife conservation and established the William Holden Wildlife Foundation and the William Holden Wildlife Education Center in Kenya.

Holden passed away on November 12, 1981, at the age of 63, due to complications from a fall at his apartment. He is remembered as one of the greatest actors of his generation, known for his talent, charisma, and dedication to his craft.
