Biography

Virginia Bosler, a talented dancer and actress, was born on September 23, 1926, in Newton, Massachusetts, to Marjorie (Fairbanks) and John Bosler, a marine engineer. Growing up in rural areas along the northeast coast, she developed a strong connection to the environment and preferred the quiet pace of her childhood home.

Virginia's early dance lessons as a child were short-lived, but her interest was rekindled as a teenager. She attended Jacob's Pillow in Becket, Massachusetts, for three summers, where she became a favorite of founder Ted Shawn. Her passion for dance led her to pursue a full scholarship to study physics at Barnard College in New York.

However, Virginia struggled to adjust to the fast-paced city life and found it challenging to balance her dance studies with her course load. She put her scholarship on hold after her first year and dedicated herself to dance, with a self-imposed deadline to secure a professional job within twelve months. Virginia achieved her goal within eight months and began dancing on Broadway.

Agnes de Mille, a renowned choreographer, discovered Virginia's talent and hired her for the tour of Bloomer Girl in 1946. Virginia's performance caught de Mille's attention, and she was summoned back to New York to audition for a new show, Brigadoon. Virginia won the part of Jean MacLaren, a role that would become a defining moment in her career.

Virginia's performance in Brigadoon led to a year-long national tour and numerous revivals, including the 1962-63 production. She was the only original cast member to appear in the movie version of Brigadoon in 1954, and she estimated that she played Jean over a thousand times.

In the early 1950s, Virginia's stage presence stood out in productions such as Leonard Sillman's New Faces of 1952. Her association with de Mille continued to yield opportunities, including a role in the Agnes de Mille Dance Theatre and a European tour of Oklahoma! in 1955. Virginia's career was marked by various stage and television appearances until her retirement in 1963 to raise a family.

Virginia married Hubert A. Doris, a music professor, in 1956, and they had a son and a daughter. She was widowed in 2008 and lived a comfortable retirement in rural Maine until her passing in August 2020 at the age of ninety-three.
