Violet and her conjoined twin sister, Daisy Hilton, were born to a barmaid, Violet, who struggled to make ends meet. Their biological mother's circumstances meant that the twins were raised by the midwife who delivered them, Mary Hilton. Mary, who had a keen eye for opportunity, recognized the twins' unique condition and began training them to perform from a young age.
As the twins grew, they were subjected to poor treatment and a life of poverty. However, they never lost sight of their goals and, at the age of 23, they arranged a private meeting with a lawyer to take control of their own lives. This marked the beginning of their journey as their own managers, and they went on to become popular vaudeville performers.
For many years, Violet and Daisy dazzled audiences with their acts, but as the years went by, they faced stiff competition from the rise of motion pictures. Despite this, they continued to perform, taking on roles in films such as "Freaks" (1932) and "Chained for Life" (1952).
As the years took their toll, Violet and Daisy's fortunes began to decline, and they eventually fell into poverty and obscurity. It was only when their employer, a grocer, failed to receive payment from them that their bodies were discovered in their apartment. The twins left no known survivors, and their remarkable story came to a tragic end.
