Noted actress, who began her illustrious career in the film industry by playing heroine roles in Pre-Partition movies, made her debut at the tender age of sixteen in the 1942 film "Garib and Gawandhi". The film, directed by the renowned Mehboob Khan, was released in both Urdu and Punjabi languages. In "Garib", she played the role of Lata, while in "Gawandhi", she starred alongside Shyam, who played the hero.
She quickly gained recognition for her roles in Pre-Partition Hindi and Urdu films, with early notable performances in movies like "Najma" (1943),"Phool" (1945),and "Humayun" (1945). Her last film before the Partition of India was "Rajputani" (1946),in which she played a supporting role.
Despite the Partition, she chose to remain in India and continued to act in films throughout the mid-to-late 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. Her impressive filmography includes notable titles such as "Halaku" (1956),"Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi" (1958),"Kaagaz Ke Phool" (1959),"Taj Mahal" (1963),for which she received the Filmfare's Award for Best Supporting Actress, "Do Raaste" (1969),and "Pakeezah" (1972).
After a remarkable career spanning 41 years, she retired in 1983 with the release of "Razia Sultan" (1983),in which she played the role of Empress Shah Turkhan. She passed away in 2004 at the age of 78, after a prolonged illness, having appeared in over 70 feature films during her illustrious career.
