Uga Carlini, a talented and innovative filmmaker, made her non-fiction directorial debut with the deeply personal and emotional documentary 'Alison', a story of triumph and survival about rape survivor Alison Botha.
The film, which employed a creative and innovative fairytale aesthetic, was widely acclaimed for its poetic and insightful exploration of trauma and overcoming, ultimately winning the Best Documentary Award at the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) and several other prestigious film awards worldwide, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, including Best Documentary Screenplay for the Writer's Guild of South Africa.
Carlini's debut fiction film, 'Angeliena', was released on Netflix in October 2021 and tells the inspiring story of the colorful and beloved parking attendant Angeliena, who after a series of life-changing revelations, pieces a new plan together and chases her dream of traveling the world.
The film won numerous awards, including the 2022 SAFTAs (South African Film and Television Awards) and the 2022 African Movie Academy Awards, with the screenplay also being a finalist for the South African Writer's Guild Muse Awards.
In addition to her work in film, Carlini has also directed commercials, music videos, and documentary pieces, many of which have won international awards.
As the Founder and President of the multi-award-winning boutique production company Towerkop Creations, established in 2010, Carlini has been dedicated to producing female-driven heroine stories, showcasing her commitment to promoting women's voices and perspectives in the industry.
