Biography

Trey Gunn's creative life has always been a fusion of storytelling, visual imagery, and music, with each art form informing and inspiring the others. This synergy is evident in his work, which spans photography, painting, language, and film.

Born in Texas, Gunn began his musical journey at the age of seven, playing piano. His interests soon expanded to include electric bass, electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, and the touch guitar. He went on to complete a degree in classical music composition at the University of Oregon before relocating to New York City, where his professional career flourished.

In 1992, Gunn was invited to join David Sylvian and Robert Fripp on a collaborative project that toured the United States, Europe, and Japan. The band released "The First Day" and "Damage," a live recording from the Royal Albert Hall in London, both on Virgin Records. During this period, Gunn also found time to record his debut solo album, "One Thousand Years," which marked the beginning of his exploration of storytelling, dreamtime, and music.

In 1994, Gunn joined King Crimson, a group widely regarded as the most aggressively adventurous rock band of all time. Over the next decade, he contributed to seventeen King Crimson CDs, two DVDs, and hundreds of performances. During his time with the group, Gunn played a key role in the development of the Warr Guitar, a 10-string touch guitar with the range of a piano. This innovative instrument has since been featured on his 11 solo recordings.

In addition to his work with The Trey Gunn Band, Gunn has toured and/or recorded with a wide range of artists, including TOOL, John Paul Jones, Maynard J. Keenan's Puscifer, Vernon Reid, Azam Ali, David Hykes of the Harmonic Choir, and Steven Wilson, with whom he collaborated on the Grammy-nominated album "Grace Under Pressure."

In 2003, Gunn expanded his creative horizons, delving into the world of multi-dimensional art forms. He began working on a series of children's stories set in Africa, and collaborated with Joe Mendelson on Quodia, a new form of multi-media performance art. Quodia has since become a platform for Gunn's innovative storytelling and music.

Today, Gunn is the founder of 7d Media, a media label, and 7 Directions, a multi-media production company. He continues to work on solo projects, film and television scoring, and building multi-dimensional media projects.
