Tonia's remarkable journey in the world of acting commenced at the esteemed Goodman School of Drama at Depaul University, laying the foundation for a career that would span over two and a half decades. For more than twenty-five years, she has been an integral part of the Penumbra Theatre Co., performing in numerous productions across the country, including off-Broadway and regional theaters such as the renowned Guthrie Theatre, where she brought to life the iconic role in "A Raisin in the Sun". Her extensive repertoire also includes notable performances at the Alliance Theatre, Center Stage, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Horizon Theatre, True Colors Theatre, Trinity Rep, Mixed Blood, and Steppenwolf, among others.
Tonia's impressive credits extend beyond the stage, with notable appearances in television and film. Her notable roles include "Kingdom Business" and "The Quad" on BET, "Outer Banks" on Netflix, "Atlanta" on FX, "Black Lightning" on the CW, and "Greenleaf" on the OWN Network, among many others.
For over two decades, Tonia has dedicated herself to nurturing the talents of up-and-coming artists, sharing her expertise and passion for the craft through teaching, coaching, mentoring, and guiding. Her dedication to her craft has also led her to co-write and perform a one-woman show, "Running Dark", with her daughter Alexsis Simmons, through a TCG grant in collaboration with True Colors Theatre.
Throughout her illustrious career, Tonia has been recognized with numerous accolades, including six nominations for the prestigious Atlanta Suzi Bass Award for Best Actress, with one win for Best Ensemble.
