Biography

Tom Hurwitz, ASC is a renowned documentary cinematographer in the United States, boasting an impressive array of accolades. With two Emmy Awards to his name, he has also received the prestigious Sundance and Jerusalem Film Festival Awards for Best Cinematography. His remarkable work has been recognized with an astonishing four Academy Awards and numerous nominations, including recent nods for Dancemaker and Killing in the Name.

Throughout his illustrious career, spanning over two and a half decades, Hurwitz has photographed an extensive range of films and television programs, garnering dozens of awards. These honors include Emmy, Dupont, Peabody, Directors Guild, and film festival awards for Best Documentary, with recent accolades including Emmy Awards for Best Documentary Specials for the PBS show Jerome Robbins and the PBS series Franklin.

Among his numerous award-winning projects, Hurwitz has photographed films such as Tiger-Tiger, Koch, Valentino: The Last Emperor, Harlan County USA, Wild Man Blues, My Generation, Down and Out in America, The Turandot Project, Liberty, Dolley, Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero, for PBS; and I Have a Dream, for ABC; and Killing in the Name, and Questioning Faith for HBO.

In addition to his outstanding cinematography work, Hurwitz has also directed films that have won the Cine Golden Eagle (for Bombs will Make the Rainbow Break) and have been showcased at festivals worldwide. As a founding member of the faculty at The MFA Program in the Social Documentary at New York's School of Visual Arts, he has dedicated himself to teaching and mentoring the next generation of documentary filmmakers.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Hurwitz is also a devoted individual with a strong sense of spirituality. For the past 30 years, he has served as a verger, or lay-liturgist, at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. He resides in Manhattan with his wife, the Jungian analyst Margaret Klenck, and has three grown children and five grandchildren.
