Ted Vollrath was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1936, a year that would shape the course of his life in ways both extraordinary and challenging. His early life took a dramatic turn when he served in the US Marines during the Korean War, fighting bravely alongside his comrades. However, the war left an indelible mark on Vollrath, as he suffered severe injuries that would ultimately lead to the amputation of both his legs.

In 1967, he began training in the martial arts, a journey that would ultimately earn him the distinction of becoming the first person to earn a black belt in karate while training out of a wheelchair. This remarkable achievement was merely the beginning of his martial arts journey, as Vollrath went on to acquire black belts in multiple styles.

As his skills and reputation grew, Vollrath founded Martial Arts for the Handicapable Incorporated in 1971, an organization dedicated to teaching the martial arts to people with disabilities. This pioneering effort not only enabled individuals with physical limitations to participate in the martial arts, but also fostered a sense of community and empowerment.

In addition to his martial arts pursuits, Vollrath also ventured into the world of film, appearing in the 1984 action movie "Mr. No-Legs." His impressive display of martial arts prowess in the film's centerpiece set piece left audiences in awe, showcasing his remarkable physical abilities and dedication to his craft.
