Born in Korea, Sumi Jo embarked on a remarkable musical journey, commencing her studies in her native country prior to enrolling in the prestigious Conservatory of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy.
Her impressive debut recital in Seoul was swiftly followed by performances with the Korean Broadcasting Company Orchestra, showcasing her exceptional talent to a wider audience.
Subsequently, her first operatic role was Susanna in the renowned opera Le Nozze di Figaro, which she also performed in Seoul, demonstrating her versatility and range as a singer.
During her time in Italy, Miss Jo was frequently heard in concert throughout the country, as well as in radio broadcasts and telecasts on the RAI Italian National Network, further solidifying her reputation as a talented young artist.
Upon graduating with honors from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in October 1986, Miss Jo's accolades continued to accumulate, as she went on to win numerous prestigious awards, including first prizes at international competitions in Seoul, Naples, Enna, Barcelona, and Pretoria.
In August 1986, she was unanimously awarded first prize in the Carlo Alberto Cappelli International Competition at Verona, one of the world's most important contests, open only to first prize-winners of other major competitions.
Throughout her illustrious career, Miss Jo has received numerous accolades, including her election as "Artist for Peace" of UNESCO in 2003. Today, she resides in Rome, where she continues to make her mark as a world-renowned soprano.
