Stephanie Wang-Breal is a multifaceted writer and director who leverages the power of film to challenge and subvert dominant narratives, shedding light on the inner workings of institutions and the individuals who inhabit their core.
Her impressive body of work includes the films Wo Ai Ni Mommy (2010),Tough Love (2014),and Blowin' Up (2018). Wo Ai Ni Mommy received widespread critical acclaim, earning the SilverDocs Grand Jury Prize, the SFIAAFF Best Documentary Award, and an Emmy nomination. Meanwhile, Blowin' Up was a New York Times' critics pick and won the Society of Authors Award at the Film Des Femmes Festival in Paris, France. Both films were broadcast on PBS' POV.
Stephanie is also a co-founder of Once in a Blue films, a female-run production company that has received support from prominent organizations such as the Sundance Institute, the Ford Foundation, NYSCA, and the Jerome Foundation. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including a 2019 Chicken and Egg Artist Award, a 2020 Creative Capital Artist Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Currently, Stephanie is in development on two feature fiction projects, and her dedication to her craft has earned her a finalist spot for the Lynn Shelton "Of a Certain Age" Award in 2020.
