Stefan Gubser's early life began with his father working for the Nestlé Group for decades and his mother taking care of the household and family. Gubser graduated from high school and went on to train as an actor at the prestigious Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna from 1978 to 1981.
At the seminar, he honed his craft and began performing on stage at Vienna's Burgtheater and other notable venues. From 1983 to 1986, he was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Bavarian State Theater in Munich, followed by an engagement at the Wiesbaden State Theater.
Gubser's stage achievements earned him an honor from the State of Berlin in 1986. He then transitioned to filmmaking and gained popularity with audiences through his work in crime series. From 1989 to 1992, he played a Swiss commissioner in the European series "Eurocops".
In the romantic drama "Confessional of Desire" from 1997, Gubser portrayed a young priest. He also appeared in a series role as Erik Hilgers in the early evening episodes of "Star Catcher" in 2002. Gubser won the Swiss television award TV Star in the "Film" category in 2005 and the audience award "Festival of German Film" and Interfilm Prize for "Hellogoodbye" in 2008.
In 2006, Gubser produced his first feature film "Before I Live" under the direction of Stefan Jäger, fulfilling his personal wish of working behind the camera. The same year, he co-wrote the script and produced the drama film "Hello Goodbye", in which he played the male lead role of the terminally ill father Michael.
Gubser founded the production company "tellfilm" with director Stefan Jäger and produced the stage comedy "Rockerbuebe", in which he impressed with his comic talent. He has worked with numerous renowned filmmakers and actors, including Ben Gazzara, Dana Vavrowa, Matthias Habich, David Carradine, and Claudia Cardinale.
In 2010, Gubser produced Lucerne's first "Tatort" and played Inspector Reto Flückinger, who has been a part of the Swiss "Tatort" team since 2011. In 2017, he published a fairy tale book "Di gschtifleti Gans - Grimm-Märli und Schlafliedli zum Läse und Loose" with his daughter Stefanie.
