Initially launching his career as "Slim", part of the dynamic duo Slim & Slam, alongside the talented Slam Stewart. Subsequently, he formed his own musical ensemble, showcasing his unique artistry. As a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) since 1949, he collaborated with a range of esteemed musicians, including the prolific Bud Green, the accomplished Harry Squires, and his longtime musical partner, Slam Stewart. His extensive repertoire of popular song compositions boasts a diverse range of hits, including the iconic "Flat Foot Floogie", the energetic "Tutti Frutti", and the catchy "Cement Mixer", as well as the charming "Vol Vist du Gaily Star" and the lively "Chicken Rhythm".
