Simerjit Singh, a renowned Director and Writer of Punjabi films, was born on December 6, 1973, in the Moga district of Punjab. Growing up in this vibrant region, he developed a passion for the film industry, which would later become his career.
Simerjit's most notable work is the 2015 film Angrej, which starred Amrinder Gill, Aditi Sharma, Sargun Mehta, Ammy Virk, and Binnu Dhillon. This film not only became the second-highest-grossing Punjabi film of 2015 but also the fourth-highest-grossing Punjabi film of all time. His exceptional direction earned him a spot in the top 5 Directors of Pollywood, according to a survey by an organization.
Before making his mark in Punjabi cinema, Simerjit completed his graduation in commerce from Chandigarh University in 1993. He then moved to Mumbai in 1997 to pursue his dream of working in the film industry. He got his big break when he was selected as an assistant director for Anees Bazmee's Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998).
Simerjit continued to work as an assistant director for various films, including Raju Chacha (2000),Blackmail (2005),and Zameen (2003). During his time on the set of Blackmail, he developed a fascination with Punjabi films and eventually joined Manoj Punj for the Punjabi film Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris (2006) as the chief assistant director.
In 2010, Simerjit wrote and directed his first film, Chak Jawana, starring Gurdas Maan, Jonita Doda, Rana Ranbir, Karamjit Anmol, and Harry Sharan. Although the film did not perform well at the box office, it marked the beginning of his journey as a director.
Simerjit's subsequent films, Daddy Cool Munde Fool (2013) and Baaz (2014),showcased his growth as a director. The former film, starring Harish Verma, Amrinder Gill, Ihana Dhillon, Yuvika Chaudhary, Jaswinder Bhalla, Amar Noorie, and Rana Ranbir, scored the fifth-highest Punjabi film opening week collections at the time of its release.
His latest release, Angrej, has been a huge success at the box office, solidifying Simerjit's position as one of the most popular Directors and Writers of Punjabi films.
