South Korean native Shin, along with his wife, claimed to have been forcibly abducted from their homeland in the late 1970s, with the sinister intention of being held captive in North Korea. The alleged kidnapping was reportedly orchestrated to coerce them into creating films for the benefit of Kim Jong Il, the son of the North Korean leader. This harrowing experience lasted for several years, during which time Shin and his wife were compelled to work on numerous movie projects. Eventually, in 1986, Shin Sang-ok decided to seek asylum in the United States, mere months before the completion of the film "Pulgasary".
