Shi Ke was born in Dangyang, Hubei Province, China, to an intellectual family as the youngest of four sisters. She graduated from middle school in 1981 and began working as a self-employed laborer for four years. Due to her talented voice, friends encouraged her to pursue a career in music or drama, and in 1985, she took part in two entrance examinations held by the Wuhan Music Academy and the Central Drama Academy of Beijing. Shi Ke's exceptional talent impressed the two renowned colleges, and they both wanted to recruit her, but she ultimately chose the drama institute and moved to Beijing.
After graduating from the Central Academy of Drama in 1989, Shi Ke quickly rose to national prominence with roles in films such as "A Killer's Love" and "Rock'n' Roll Youth," becoming a teenage idol. She then went on to star in numerous TV dramas, including the award-winning "Have a Good Time," and established herself as a talented singer with her classically-trained voice. In 1990, she starred in the Chinese musical "Sunrise," which earned her a ringing award.
In 1991, Shi Ke married Chinese music producer Wang Xiaoma, but her career was almost derailed in 1995 due to false accusations and a Cultural Revolution-style political campaign against her. The controversy surrounding her and the government-owned theater troupe led to a media blackout, but Shi Ke endured the year and emerged even more famous than before.
Throughout her career, Shi Ke has produced, directed, and starred in numerous stage plays, TV shows, and movies, earning her the reputation as one of the best stage players in China. She has also been recognized for her charity work and support for young children and poor families, earning her an award from the Chinese government.
