Biography

Sergei Loznitsa, a renowned Ukrainian filmmaker, entered this world on September 5th, 1964, in the city of Baranovichi, which was then part of the USSR. As a young individual, he spent his formative years in Kiev, where he would later receive his academic foundation.

In 1987, Loznitsa earned a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics from the prestigious Kiev Polytechnic. Following his graduation, he went on to work as a scientist at the Kiev Institute of Cybernetics from 1987 to 1991, focusing his research on the cutting-edge field of artificial intelligence.

In addition to his scientific pursuits, Loznitsa also honed his language skills by working as a translator from Japanese during this period.

After a decade of exploring the realm of science, Loznitsa redirected his creative energies towards the world of film. In 1997, he graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, where he studied the art of feature filmmaking under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Throughout his illustrious career, Loznitsa has been prolific in his output, having directed 21 documentaries and four feature films. His work has spanned multiple genres, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft.

In 2013, Loznitsa took the initiative to establish a film production and distribution company called ATOMS & VOID, which has allowed him to further expand his creative horizons and bring his unique vision to a wider audience.

Today, Sergei Loznitsa continues to push the boundaries of his craft, effortlessly transitioning between documentary and feature film genres, leaving an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
