Sebastian del Amo, a Mexican-born French filmmaker, was born in 1971 in Paris. He graduated from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico City, specializing in cinematography.
Del Amo made his directorial debut at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in 2012 with the feature film "The Fantastic World of Juan Orol". The film received widespread critical acclaim, earning numerous awards, including the Mayahuel for Best First Feature, the Mexican Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Picture, and Best Costume Design, and the Cristal Screen Award for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor, among others.
His second feature, "Cantinflas", became the highest-grossing foreign language film in the US in 2014, ranking as the third best release for a Mexican film in history and the fifth best-grossing Mexican film in the US. The film also performed well in Mexico, becoming the seventh best-grossing film in the country's history and remaining at the top of the box office for two weeks. "Cantinflas" was released in 20 countries across Latin America and earned over $19 million worldwide. The film earned several awards, including the Platino Award for Best Actor, the Canacine Award for Best Actor, and the ACE Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.
Del Amo's third feature, "El Complot Mongol", stars a talented ensemble cast, including Damián Alcázar, Bárbara Mori, Eugenio Derbez, Roberto Sosa, Ari Brickman, Moisés Arizmendi, and Xavier López "Chabelo".
