Scott Marshall Smith, a renowned US writer and director, was born in Monterey, California, and raised in the Midwest. His journey in the entertainment industry began with a stint at Panavision Hollywood, where he served as a founding executive and eventually rose to the position of Director of Marketing. During his five-year tenure at PVH, Smith developed an in-depth understanding of cinematography, providing cameras to numerous legendary filmmakers, including Academy Award winners Quentin Tarantino and Emmanuel Lubezki.
As his screenwriting career began to flourish, Smith was hired by Paramount to pen the script for "Men of Honor" and by Disney to draft an action thriller for director Tony Scott. He subsequently left his corporate role to focus on writing full-time. Over the years, Smith has enjoyed the rare privilege of receiving sole credit on three of his produced features and has sold and performed assignment work on over forty screenplays for major studios, including Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Fox 2000, Universal, Warner Bros., Sony, Disney, and Miramax.
Throughout his career, Smith has had the opportunity to collaborate with numerous Oscar nominees and winners, such as Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, Marlon Brando, Charlize Theron, Cuba Gooding Jr., Hal Holbrook, and Laura Dern. He has worked in a variety of genres, writing both small, intimate films and big-budget tent poles exceeding $90 million.
Smith's educational background includes a degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He began his career in entertainment working for renowned commercial and music video director Bob Giraldi, spending four years learning production on Manhattan's mean streets before leaving Geraldi Productions to pursue his writing career in Los Angeles.
Smith's passion project, Camera Store, marked his producing and directorial debut. The film was released theatrically in East Coast markets in December 2016 and premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January 2017. Ultimately, the movie was picked up by Netflix.
Today, Smith serves as the president and founder of entertainment company Bourbon & Cigarettes and is working on a number of rewrites and original projects, dividing his time between Los Angeles and London.
