Sasie Sealy is a renowned writer/director who has made a name for herself in the film industry with her unique style and flair. Born and raised in the Southern United States, she has a distinct drawl that is still present in her speech today.
Sealy's journey into filmmaking began with a passion for photography, which she studied with the renowned photographer Gregory Crewdson. She also honed her writing and performing skills with the sketch comedy troupe The Fifth Humour. However, it was her love of striking visuals and physical comedy that ultimately led her to pursue a career in filmmaking.
Sealy's feature film debut, Lucky Grandma, premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. The film was listed by The New York Times as one of the "9 Filmmakers Who Should Be on Your Radar" and was released theatrically earlier this year to rave reviews. It has also appeared on multiple "Best of 2020" lists, including those from Indiewire, New York Magazine, and Refinery29.
In addition to her feature film work, Sealy has also had success with her short films. Her shorts have screened at the Smithsonian Institute and festivals around the world, and she has twice been awarded the short filmmaking prize at the Tribeca Film Festival. Her film The Elephant Garden was praised by New York Magazine as "one of the most touching and poignant films we've seen this year."
Sealy has also had the opportunity to work in the commercial world of fashion and beauty, directing projects for brands such as Maybelline and Calvin Klein. Her commercial work has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Glamour, Style.com, and Refinery29.
In addition to her work in film and television, Sealy is also a member of Bullitt Branded, a filmmaking collective and creative studio founded by Justin Lin and the Russo Brothers. She is also a fellow of the 2020 Alice Initiative, a list of emerging female directors.
When she's not working on a project, Sealy enjoys high fashion, the film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and long walks on the beach.
