Born in 1941 in Pune, Maharashtra, Shrimati Sarita Joshi, formerly known as Shrimati Sarita Bhonsle, was introduced to professional theatre at a young age. At the tender age of seven, she joined the renowned New Laxmikant Company of Baroda, marking the beginning of her illustrious career.
Shrimati Sarita Joshi's journey as an actress spanned multiple decades, with stints in the Khatau Alfred Theatrical Company and Indian National Theatre in Bombay, until 1982. She then joined Pravin Joshi Theatre in 1983, concurrently acting in several Gujarati films.
Throughout her active career on stage, Shrimati Sarita Joshi has acted in an impressive 150 plays, many of which were notable successes. Some of her most notable performances include Balwant ni Baby, directed by Adi Marzban, and Santu Rangili, directed by her husband Pravin Joshi, a Gujarati adaptation of Shaw's Pygmalion, which ran for an astonishing 500 shows.
In the 1970s, Shrimati Joshi ventured into direction, helming a Gujarati adaptation of Badal Sircar's Evam Indrajit. As an actress in Gujarati films, she has received three awards from the Government of Gujarat, and as a stage actress, she was honored by the Akhil Marathi Natya Parishad, Bombay, in 1984.
Shrimati Sarita Joshi's contributions to theatre were recognized with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1988.
In addition to her stage and film work, Shrimati Sarita Joshi has also made a mark on television, playing the iconic role of 'Baa' in the extremely popular TV serial 'Baa Bahoo aur Baby', for which she has won numerous awards. She has also appeared in Mani Ratnam's film 'Guru', as Abhishek Bachchan's mother, and played a central character in the 2008 movie Dasvidaniya. Her recent film appearance was as the title character 'Gangoobai' in the 2013 release.
